What gear do I need as a new rider?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerAt minimum: a DOT-approved helmet, eye protection, gloves, a jacket, long pants, and over-the-ankle boots. Full gear reduces injury risk and makes riding more comfortable.

Essential gear

A helmet is the most important piece. In the U.S., look for a DOT sticker; many riders also choose Snell or ECE-rated helmets for better protection. Full-face helmets offer the most coverage.

Gloves protect your hands and help with grip. A motorcycle jacket—leather or textile—protects against road rash and weather. Wear long pants (riding pants or sturdy jeans) and over-the-ankle boots to protect your feet and ankles.

  • DOT-approved helmet (full-face recommended)
  • Motorcycle gloves
  • Armored jacket (leather or textile)
  • Riding pants or sturdy jeans
  • Over-the-ankle boots
  • Eye protection if helmet lacks a visor

Upgrades and extras

As you ride more, consider upgrading to gear with armor at the shoulders, elbows, back, knees, and hips. Waterproof gear is worth it if you ride in wet climates. High-visibility colors or reflective strips help drivers see you.

Don't forget earplugs to reduce wind noise, and a rain suit if you commute. Gear can be expensive, but you can find good used items or sales. Fit matters—gear should be snug but allow movement.

Common mistakes

  • Wearing a cheap helmet that isn't DOT-approved—it may not protect you in a crash.
  • Riding in sneakers or sandals, which offer no ankle protection.
  • Buying gear that's too loose; it can shift in a slide and expose skin.
